How many Arches are there on Legzira Beach? We tell you about it

Legzira beach is one of the most photogenic in all of Morocco, without a doubt. And in this Tenere Tours blog, we are very fond of this type of enclave, for maintaining its wild and original beauty. In this post we tell you what its attraction is and we talk about the arches that have made it famous.

Where is Legzira Beach

First of all, it is important to locate Legzira beach: it is located in the far south, about 11 km from Sidi Ifni and about 150 km from Agadir, via coastal roads. That is why many travel here as an excursion from this last tourist destination, but you can also enjoy it in a more leisurely way if you choose accommodation on the still peaceful coast of Guelmim-Río Noun.

What is Legzira Beach Like

If you know Legzira beach, you have probably seen photographs of its unique coastline. It is a very long beach, with a relatively straight sandy area, about 5 km long, dotted with rock formations that are a testimony to the sedimentary work of the rivers that poured their waters here from the Atlas Mountains, shaped in turn by the marine erosion of the Atlantic.

The rock is a red sandstone which gives a very characteristic tone to the coastline, to which is added the constant breeze of this coast and impetuous waters that usually break upon arrival at the shore. Its geographical orientation also makes the sunsets special, as it allows you to witness how the sun falls along the marine horizon line, as in many other points on this coast.

However, Legzira beach is no stranger to international tourism and is becoming increasingly well-known, in addition to the new development of a apartment-villa on the beachfront. From its parking lot, by the way, the activity of paragliding has become popular, which allows controlled flights over this suggestive place.

The Arches of Legzira Beach

But without a doubt, what has made Legzira beach famous are its arches: the Sleeping Arch and the Elephant’s Foot Arch. However, at present we can only speak of one, the first, since the second (Elephant’s Foot) collapsed in 2016. A pity for all the inhabitants of the place, who saw it as an authentic symbol, but the fragility caused by the incessant erosion caused its fall.

However, for the moment there is no alarm about the Sleeping Arch, as it seems more robust than the destroyed one, whose pillar on which its weight rested was much narrower. On the other hand, the arch that remains standing is rather a tunnel created by the water, through which you can walk in a suggestive walk.

Now, if you are an intrepid explorer and you are not satisfied with seeing only the Sleeping Arch, you can travel a few kilometers to the south, where there is another: the Arch of Ali Amman. It is located in a less accessible corner than the previous one, since there are only dirt tracks around it. In addition, at its feet there is not a wide sandy area for bathing, as is the case in the surroundings of the Sleeping Arch, but a stony shore. But if you travel here, you will discover another of these natural phenomena that is worth contemplating for its rarity.

In any case, whether you are satisfied with the Sleeping Arch or prefer to continue exploring the coast in search of coves, cliffs and unknown arches, you should know that this corner of the Atlantic coast does not have as many tourist infrastructures as the surroundings of Agadir, so it is essential that you plan your getaway well.
