4-Day Tour: Agadir to Marrakech, via the Desert and the Atlas Mountains

Southern Morocco is a vast, unspoiled territory, unexplored by most travelers. And Agadir is a magnificent city from which to discover it thanks to tours that, like this one, condense the most important things into 4 days: high mountains, desert dunes, Berber kasbahs… Take a look at this 4-day route from Agadir to Marrakech, crossing the desert and the Atlas Mountains.

Desert of Dunes and Hammadas

The Sahara Desert extends its arid blanket across southern Morocco. And although it can be inhospitable, its magical landscapes are a real tourist attraction for the most adventurous travelers. The fine sand dunes, grouped in gentle hills that change shape every day, are the great goal of this 4-day tour from Agadir to Marrakech. The suggestive colors of sunset and sunrise, as well as the starry night sky, offer an unusual and unforgettable atmosphere for anyone.

But the road to the goal is equally interesting, through valleys dotted with oases where the green of the palm trees contrasts with the ochre of the surroundings: a stony terrain and bare mountains, which turn to brown or reddish tones depending on the light of each moment. In addition, these valleys are full of kasbahs or Berber adobe fortresses, which adds a touch of charm to this mythical road route.

The Atlas and Anti-Atlas, in the Same Trip

Morocco is a very mountainous country. And on this 4-day tour from Agadir to Marrakech, we will cross its most spectacular mountain range: the Atlas. In reality, we will cross two different areas. First, the Anti-Atlas, the lowest and most arid mountain range, which many will find familiar from the film Babel. And secondly, the High Atlas, the highest segment where Mount Toubkal stands, imposing, the ‘roof’ of Morocco at 4,167 meters above sea level.

Each curve of the road will give us unforgettable images, whether in ports such as Tizi n’Tichka or in rocky canyons such as the Todra Gorges. Therefore, this tour full of wild nature is the perfect counterpoint to a relaxing vacation in Agadir, but also to the bustling hustle and bustle of the Marrakech medina, the beginning and end of the route, respectively.

The circuit, in detail

This 4-day tour from Agadir can start at the airport of this city or at another point to be agreed with you, for example the hotel or resort where you have been staying the previous days. At the agreed time, our driver will pick you up in a private vehicle to start this tour of the south of the country.

The first part of the route will run through mountainous environments of the Atlas, the great mountain range of Morocco, with deep valleys and high peaks that make up landscapes dotted with small Berber villages, worthy of immortalizing.

The main visit of this first day is that of Ait Ben Haddou, located at the foot of the High Atlas and next to a peaceful oasis. This fortified village was a strategic service settlement on the caravan routes of the past. Its high walls and its crowded adobe houses are very picturesque, which is why it is declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco and served as the filming location for several chapters of the series Game of Thrones.

After visiting this fortress or ksar, we will continue to the nearby Ouarzazate, famous for its Atlas Studios film studios, where important Hollywood films have been shot. In this city is the charming riad where you will have dinner and spend this first night of the tour.

Summary of the Day

  • Pick-up at airport or hotel
  • Start of the route in a private vehicle, with driver
  • Atlas Mountains (Anti Atlas or High Atlas)
  • Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou: visit
  • Night in a charming riad in Ouarzazate

After recharging your batteries with breakfast at the hotel, we will launch ourselves back on the road for the route of this second day, a road trip through genuine valleys that will escort us to the deepest desert.

That first valley is that of the Draa, whose landscape is dominated by an enormous palm grove, considered the longest oasis in the world, with more than 100 km. Our route will not cover everything, but enough to enjoy this contrast between the green of the vegetation and the ochre of the steep hills around it. In this environment also arise kasbahs and charming villages, such as Nkob, Tazarine or Alnif.

Soon after we will arrive at Rissani, a town that preserves one of the best traditional medinas in all of southern Morocco. On market days, its atmosphere is very popular, with donkeys tied to the doors of the wall. And almost without time to digest these scenes full of typism, we will arrive at the nearby Merzouga, a town where the dromedaries await us to take us to the haimas camp where we will have dinner and sleep.

Dromedaries can be exchanged for 4×4 vehicles, but these animals are, in fact, the most suitable means of transport to cross the dunes of Erg Chebbi, a terrain of fine sand hills where we will feel the immense embrace of the Sahara desert, sifted by the magical light of sunset and the glow of the stars at night.

Summary of the Day

  • Breakfast at hotel in Ouarzazate
  • Start of the road route:
    • Draa Valley: Nkob, Tazzarine, Alnif
    • Rissani
    • Merzouga
  • Dromedary route through the Erg Chebbi dunes
  • Dinner and night in a haimas camp, in Erg Chebbi

Is there anything that can be compared to a sunset in the dunes of Erg Chebbi? Only one thing: a sunrise. Therefore, it will be worth getting up early and seeing this magical moment on the sand. Breakfast will be served in the haimas camp and, after that, we will head back to Merzouga, where you can take a refreshing shower to continue the route.

Back on the road, we will take a different path to now travel the Dades Valley, which also holds surprises and fantastic corners. Perhaps the most spectacular arrives after passing the beautiful Tinerhir and entering another even more enclosed valley, that of the Todra: here we will come across some Gorges with extraordinarily vertical and high walls, a paradise for climbers.

After that, the route will continue through the Dades Valley to one of the many charming villages along the way. In one of them will be our riad, to have dinner and sleep in the night.

Summary of the Day

  • Sunrise and breakfast in a haimas camp in Erg Chebbi
  • Return to Merzouga and shower at hotel
  • Continuation of the road route in the Dades Valley
    • Todra Gorges
  • Dinner and night in a charming riad, in the Dades Valley

The fourth and last day of this tour still has interesting visits on the program, and we will leave for them after having breakfast at the riad in the Dades Valley. One of the first sections we will travel receives another more suggestive name: the  Valley of the Roses, which in spring reaches its maximum splendor with the countless rose bushes that populate it.

Soon after we will arrive at Ouarzazate, a city that we already knew on the first day but that now will open the doors to another of its icons: the kasbah of Taourirt, one of the most beautiful fortified palaces in the country, which was the residence of the powerful El Glaoui family.

After that, it will be time to head to the High Atlas and ascend to the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, at more than 2,200 meters of altitude. After crowning the pass, all that remains is to enjoy the descent to Marrakech. Our driver will take you to the place agreed for the end of our services, such as a hotel, a central point of the city or the Marrakech-Menara Airport. A goodbye that, we hope, will be a ‘see you next time’, to enjoy later a new tour or circuit with Tenere Tours.

Summary of the Day

  • Breakfast in riad in the Dades Valley
  • Continuation of the route:
    • Valley of the Roses
    • Kasbah of Taourirt, in Ouarzazate
    • Tizi n’Tichka Pass (High Atlas)
  • Arrival in Marrakech or airport
