Camel rides in Morocco are one of the favorite activities for many tourists in this country, especially for those traveling with family, as these animals always attract the attention of the little ones. So in this post we show you some of the many places where you can enjoy this experience. By the way, we have used the term camel as it is the most common name for this animal, but as we explained in this post in this other postthe ones present here are actually dromedaries.
Marrakech Palmeraie
In the great city of southern Morocco, the country’s true tourist capital, there are places very conducive to camel rides. One of them is undoubtedly the palm grove or Palmeraiea huge huge grouping of these trees which has more than a millennium of history and an innovative water catchment system. On the surface, its ample space provides the ideal conditions for a ride on the backs of these noble animals. Therefore, they represent a magnificent combination of fauna and flora typical of Morocco, a stone’s throw from its most representative city.
Agafay Desert
A little more than 30 km from Marrakech is located in this desert, equipped with camps with every detail, which has become a more accessible alternative to the Sahara desert, due to its proximity to the city. Its stony terrain of hammada The hilly terrain is, in any case, suitable for short walks around the aforementioned campsites. In many cases, the walks are short, barely half an hour, which is a good option for children who are not familiar with this animal and who can thus come into contact with them in a simple way.
From Merzouga to Erg Chebbi
There is no doubt that the dromedary became the “means of transport” with the desert caravans, which centuries ago connected North Africa with the sub-Saharan area. So, to live the most similar experience to what the traders of the past experienced, there is nothing better than riding through the dunes of the Moroccan Sahara. Specifically, those of Erg Chebbi, in the desert of MerzougaTo move from this locality to the Berber tents camps, it is necessary a two-hour ride on the back of these animals (the alternative is 4×4 vehicles).
On the beaches of Essaouira
The coastal city of Essaouira, about 180 km from Marrakech, is one of the tourist jewels of the country. And also one of the places to enjoy a camel ride in Morocco. What makes the difference here is that the tours will take you, for sure, along the beaches of the Atlantic coastThe landscape is still very unspoiled on the outskirts of the city. Strolling along the sandy beaches, with stretches where dromedaries dip their legs in the water, while the sea breeze caresses the faces of their riders, makes this experience one of the most recommended.
Up to the Souss river in Agadir
We close this selection of camel rides in Morocco with the proposal of Agadir, another tourist destination par excellence in the south of the country. Although it is a city bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, like Essaouira, here many of the dromedary routes lead slightly inland, specifically along a eucalyptus forest to the outskirts until you reach the banks of the Souss River. The terrain is therefore simple and conducive to such a route, with equally beautiful photographs of the surroundings.
