Knowing where to see the best sunsets in Morocco is useful information to put the cherry on top of a day of sightseeing. And fortunately, there are countless charming places to witness this magical moment that, although it repeats every day, is different each time. Take note of the following suggestions in case you could fit any of them into your travel itinerary, or use them as inspiration to find other spots with similar characteristics.
Sunsets on the Atlantic coast
Morocco’s Atlantic coast runs for several thousand kilometers along the entire west of the country. It is from this cardinal point that the sun sets and, thanks to the absence of geographical obstacles facing this coast, at any of these points it is easy to see how the sun falls beyond the horizon line, as if falling into a magical abyss. Therefore, any coastal town on this coastline will offer unparalleled places to admire this moment, but if we had to choose two with special charm, those could be:
- Asilah, and especially the western flank of the walls surrounding the medina: located on the rocky cliffs where the waves break, it can well be considered a wild and energetic sunset, with the sound of the force of the sea
- Essaouira: especially at the bastions of the Skala kasbah or on the beaches to the south of it, where the sea breeze adds a refreshing touch that is always welcome.
Sunsets in the desert
The magic of a sunset in the desert lies in the stillness, silence and peace it conveys. But also, in the beautiful colors that are projected in the atmosphere, as they enhance the golden hue of the dunes of sand or the reddish mountains until reaching an incomparably warm light. Among the many options you can consider are:
- Merzouga and its Erg Chebbi dunes, which can be considered the purest in the country, with considerable elevations from where to admire this phenomenon.
- Ait Ben Haddou, located near Ouarzazate, in the Dades Valley, in a landscape of arid mountains, a walled adobe ksar and small oases, whose beauty is magnified at sunset
Sunsets in the mountains
Morocco is a surprisingly mountainous country, with fertile valleys that offer panoramic views of extraordinary appeal. From a photogenic point of view, the most interesting mountain ranges may be the Middle Atlas (the greenest), the High Atlas (the highest, with Mount Toubkal) and the Rif (the most Mediterranean). And these are some of its most interesting locations:
- Ourika Valley: in small villages like Ourika or in its surroundings, you will find elevated points from where to see a beautiful sunset landscape, with villages clustered on the slopes, lush vegetation along the river and a more arid and harsh background as you gain altitude
- Chaouen: and in particular, from the viewpoint of the Spanish Mosque, where the views of the blue houses offer a beautiful contrast with the green of the two mountains flanking the town and the golden hue of the last rays of sun
Urban sunsets
And of course, in the cities the options for a beautiful sunset multiply, often from the highest terraces of buildings facing west, without obstacles preventing you from witnessing the landscape. These are just two options of the many you will find in each destination:
- Tangier and the kasbah of the medina is an unbeatable place from where to contemplate the sunset and the illuminated Strait of Gibraltar, with the coasts of Cádiz in the background.
- Marrakech and the terraces of the riads in the medina, from where to admire the even more reddish color of the historic center of the city. For example, Cafe Medina Rouge, with views of the iconic Koutoubia mosque.
